E-Learning Trends in Africa


According to the Africa Learning Barometer, out of the 128 million school-aged children in the continent:

  • 17 million never go to School
  • 97 million will enter school, out of which 37 million will not learn basic skills
  • 14 million will enter school late, out of which 3.6 million will not learn

As a response to such similar reports in 2012, the e-learning movement intensified in the continent. The objective being, improvement in the quality of education. As a result, many public-private partnerships came into existence. Today, these associations are leveling the playfield for African students globally.

From 2011 to 2016, the e-learning market in Africa has nearly doubled. The current market is around USD 513 million. South Africa leads the eLearning market followed by Angola, Nigeria, and Tunisia. Furthermore, Senegal, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Zambia contribute to 25% of the market annually.

E-Learning is more than just delivering school & university curriculum electronically. Following are upcoming trends which will redefine the Edtech scene in the continent in 2017:

More Gamification

It’s true. Gamification is not new, but every learner loves a gamified environment. 2017 will bring further enhancement in the gamification experience. The advantage lies in the learner’s awareness about the mistake one makes and the consequent improvisation of the same. Consider the case of Ubongo Kids from Tanzania:-


  1. Kids respond to multiple choice questions via SMS
  2. Kids then receive feedback from their cartoon characters on TV

Personalized Learning Experience

Human adults can focus on something not longer than 20 minutes. In addition, this duration of intense focus is much shorter in kids and adolescents.   1. Brings byte sized courses to the user’s inbox every morning
  2. Offers courses that are all 10 days long
  3. Makes every lesson into a 5-minute E-mail

Flipped Classrooms

Flipped classrooms are an exact reverse of traditional lecture-based classroom delivery. Under this approach, the content (short videos, infographics, PPTs) are viewed by the students before the lecture. The lecture time is then utilized into discussions, doubt solving, projects, exercises etc.

This increases the productivity and efficiency of students as well as the teachers. Unlike a typical classroom, students can revisit a part of the video/presentation for grasping complicated topics.


Official Degrees/Certificates for Online Courses

There are many initiatives out there which are relevant here. Take the case of edx.org, an MOOC platform which aggregates popular courses from universities worldwide. The users can register for these courses and upon successful completion get a verified certificate from the university offering the course.
